Dehydrate Foods Using a Dehydrator
Dehydrators are a wonderful way to preserve foods for a longer time whilst maintaining their nutritious value.
They do need an investment but there are some reasonably priced ones on the internet.
With a dehydrator you can quickly preserve foods for healthy, natural & delicious snacks which are then ideal for lunchboxes and jars, for snacking & grazing. Dehydrating extracts moisture but retains vitamins, minerals & taste. Dehydrators dry at temperatures slowly. The process inhibits bacterial growth, and indeed, fresh foods can often contain simple yeasts, mould and bacteria but the drying process inhibits these to a great extent.
Select foods that are ripe and fresh, and free of blemishes and bruises.
What can you dehydrate?
Just about anything! Have fun and experiment. You can make vegetable and fruit crisps easily. Some foods will work better than others. Here are some good candidates for dehydration:
Vegetables - tomatoes, onions, potatoes, turnips, corn, peas, celery, beets, carrots, squash, pumpkin, broccoli, alkaline berries, freshly dried herbs.
Fruits – figs, grapes, plums, pears, peaches, bananas.
The result is small pieces of nutritious snacks to nibble on as and when you need to – take them with you and they are always readily available. Sprinkle with a little Himalayan salt and fresh pepper for taste.
A dehydrator will make alkalising much easier.
